l Hijab is a word meaning barrier, partition or veil.
l In Islam it encompasses the principle of modesty and includes behaviour as well as dress for both men and women.
l The hijab headscarves, regarded by many Muslims as a symbol of both religion and womanhood, come in a myriad of styles and colours.
l The type most commonly worn in the West is a square scarf that covers the head and neck but leaves the face clear.
l A woman who wears hijab is called Muhaajaba.
l Hijab does not need to be worn in front of other Muslim women, but there is debate about what can be revealed to non-Muslim women.
